My uncle is from Tyrnavos Greece which is known for their ouzo or the stronger Tsipouro.
Ouzo is a drink that has a high alcohol content ( about 40-50%) and is usually drunk straight from a shot glass or with water or ice. (Adding water or ice to ouzo makes this clear drink cloudy.)
Ouzo smells like and has the flavor of licorice. It often accompanies Greek appetizers of octopus, calamari, salad, and feta cheese.
It is best taken in small doses - the "side effects" are acting foolish and feeling nauseous.
Some Greeks will take a swig of Tsipouro for medicinal purposes. I guess it sterilizes your insides.
Have you ever tried Ouzo?

I have heard of it, but never tried it. That is a lot of alcohol in it; I can see why it would have the effects it does on people.
betyt
I have never heard of it. Not sure I'd try it. I'm not a fan of licorice and I'm a lightweight so it'd take one drink and I'd be done.

Sterilizes them or maybe just pickles them. An uncle from Greece. How exotic that sounds to me.
